The United States is being severely hit with the fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic as it has yet again broken its single-day new infections record by recording a whopping amount of 580,000 cases on Thursday.

As the entire world is entering its third year of pandemic, the rapid spread of the virus is becoming an alarming sign. The New York Times’ database also verified the fact that the United States recorded 488,000new infections on Wednesday, which was almost double the amount that the nation recorded last winter.

Although the virus is spreading at a rapid rate, the number of hospitalizations and deaths has not followed the same rate of increase. It goes on to prove that the ‘OMICRON’ variant of the virus is not stronger than the ‘DELTA’ variant and is causing less severe illness.

Throughout the country, several airlines have canceled thousands of flights, as they are worried about the fast spread of the disease. At several places, huge crowds are being seen in the queue for getting their respective coronavirus test done, as there is a huge demand in these tough times to be tested for the virus.

Health experts in the country are worried even more as they do feel that the holiday season is not putting out the real numbers of new infections properly and proper testing and data reporting is not happening. The rate at which the in-home Covid testing is going up also makes it difficult to register newly infected cases in the official count.

In the last year, during the holiday season, which occurs between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there was a major decline in cases that the country witnessed. It is a real possibility that during this year’s holiday season, more people are being infected with the virus than what is being reported and accounted for. We can only get a clear idea of this after some time.

Although the world is struggling with the increase in cases, and everyone is worried about the ‘OMICRON’ variant, research has paved its way to prove that this variant is milder than the other variants of the coronavirus. Hence, vaccinations have proved that they can fight and reduce the severity of the virus.

Owing to the database of the New York Times, we can state that62% of Americans are fully vaccinated which is a clear majority. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three-quarters of the population have received at least a single dose. It also went on to state that since 13th August, 68.8 million people have also received their third dose, which is also known as the ‘BOOSTER SHOT’.
