Famous American actor Jonathan Majors, better known as ‘Kang’ from Marvel has been found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. The incident took place after a trial in New York. The Jury found that Majors intentionally attacked British choreographer Grace Jabbari, his then-girlfriend, during an altercation in March.

Jabbari told the court that she was left with bruises, a broken finger, a cut behind her ear, and “excruciating” pain. After the actor was found guilty, he was sentenced to a year in jail and also dropped from starring in any role roles in forthcoming Marvel movies. The verdict made by a six-person Jury was announced on Monday. According to the reporters in the court, Majors had no other reaction than pressing his lips and looking downwards when the verdict came out. After the verdict, a spokesperson for Marvel said that the studio has decided not to work with Majors on future projects.

The crime took place inside a car in New York when Jabbari saw a message on Major’s phone that read, “Wish I was kissing you right now.” According to the prosecutors, when she tried to take the phone, he grabbed and twisted her arm behind and hit her on the head to get the phone back. Ms Jabbari testified, “I felt like a hard blow across my head.”

The jury has already found him guilty of two of the four domestic violence cases that have been filed against him. He was charged with assault by recklessly causing physical injury as well as harassment. However, the jury declined to convict him of harassment rather than his attempts to “exert control” over his ex-girlfriend with violence. The prosecution also shared voice recordings and text messages between the couple to the jury.

It was noticed that the actor sent a text in September 2022 to Jabbari that reads, “I’m a monster. A horrible man. Not capable of love,” which was followed by his threats to kill himself. It was quite surprising when in an audio record, the actor said Jabbari to be more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama, during an argument in the same month. Clearly, he considers himself a personality close to Martin Luther King and former President Barack Obama. He said, “I am doing great things, not just for me but for my culture and the world,” and therefore, Jabbari must “make sacrifices” for him.

Majors did not testify but his lawyers argued that he was rather the victim of Jabbari’s rage that rose after seeing the message and made her feel jealous. Though he countersued her in June, the case did not last due to lack of evidence. Majors will be sentenced in February and till then, the court had to issue a new protection order that prevents Majors from meeting Grace Jabbari.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said after the verdict that the psychological and emotional abuses caused by the celebrities were “far too common across the many intimate partner violence cases we see each and every day”.
