When the news of Super Mario Bros. being made as a movie hit the world, the fans of the game went crazy on the internet. Now that the movie is officially released, it has smashed the box office records on its opening weekend by earning a whopping $377 million in just 5 days in the global collection long with a $204.6 million domestic collection. It has beaten Frozen 2 on the box office collection and became the movie with the most successful global opening for an animated film. This family film is Hollywood’s second version of the hit Nintendo game in the first five days it overtook the previous box office record which was held by Frozen 2 for collecting $358 million. “The numbers are sensational,” stated analyst David A Gross and further went on to say that it could “easily be the #1 flick of 2023”.

In the Super Mario Bros movie, the Italian plumber with the big mustache, Mario is voiced by Chris Pratt, and on the other hand, the character of the fire-breathing villain Bowser is voiced by Jack Black. This stunning box office record was unpredictable and definitely unexpected as upon release initially it was bashed by the movie critics. The New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinski published a review where he said that the movie is “just another soulless ploy to sell us merchandise”. Similarly, another famous critic Peter Bradshaw from The Guardian called the movie, “tedious and flat in all senses”. As this is the second attempt at a live-action, he further called the film “a disappointment to match the live-action version in 1993” – giving a reference to the original live-action released in 1993, starring Bob Hoskins.

The origin story in the movie is of the Brooklyn plumbers, the Mario brothers who bring the iconic characters from Nintendo’s game to the big screen. This adaptation includes Princess Peach, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, and Charlie Day voicing Luigi besides Jack Black and Chris Pratt.

However, fans and viewers seem to disagree displayed by the box office collection and online reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is led by 56% critics’ score and a whopping 96% audience score. Praising the movie, even Billionaire and Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted saying, “the critics are so disconnected from reality!” Reporting on the audience’s reaction, Pamela McClintock from the Hollywood Reporter said, “didn’t seem to care about so-so reviews”.

Not just the box office opening records, Pamela McClintock says that the film also broke other records that include “the best-ever opening for a movie based on a video game” and “the top opening of 2023 so far”. In the same report, Paul Dergarabedian, the analyst from Comscore said, “This is one of the biggest box office over-performances in recent memory and is absolutely shattering all pre-release projections.”
