Japan was hit by a powerful earthquake on Wednesday night and the country is shaken. The north-east part of Japan is currently suffering a power breakdown with a temporary electricity countdown in more than 2 million homes.

The magnitude of the earthquake was quite high, around 7.3 on the Richter scale. It struck the same region where the Fukushima nuclear disaster took place around 11 years ago.

The officials said that more than 90 people are injured in the incident including two casualties. The AFP news agency has reported that it was nearly impossible to stand in the tremor-triggered areas. The buildings in Tokyo started rattling aggressively as per the CCTV footage.

According to the authorities, the epicenter of the earthquake was at the depth of 57 kilometers (35.4 miles) and it took place at 23:36 (14:36 GMT).

The effect was so strong that the aftershocks could be felt in Miyagi, Fukushima, and Yamagata prefectures. Immediately after the event took place, Japan’s meteorological agency has issued a broadcast for tsunami waves up to one meter (3.3ft) for parts of the north-east coast. However, NHK said that it was withdrawn later based on the situation.

The citizens of north-east Japan are especially affected with more than 156,000 people leaving home without any power. Most of them ran away to save their lives but came after the shock to restore their households. The local electricity provider said that more than 700,000 homes are still out of electricity.

Some of the people were greatly injured by the falling objects from the buildings. The local media reported several incidents from the city of Soma and Fukushima prefecture. A man in his sixties died along with another report of death in Miyagi prefecture.

The widespread effect of the earthquake also derailed a bullet train however, there was no immediate news of injuries or casualties.

Fumio Kishida, Japan’s Prime Minister said, “the government was still trying to assess the extent of any damage, and authorities said emergency services had been inundated with calls.” A city official said that he witnessed “extremely violent shaking”.

In reference to the 2011 disaster, the PM also said “I heard the ground rumbling. Rather than feeling scared, I immediately remembered the Great East Japan earthquake.”

The earthquake took place almost 60km off the coast of Fukushima; one of the famous epicenters of the earthquake in the history of Japan. The incident that happened 11 years ago took 18,000 lives and the citizens pray to not happen that incident again.

The destruction was bigger at that time due to the Fukushima nuclear plant from which radiation leaked and destroyed a major portion. The effect of the tremor stayed for a longer time and devastated the life of Japanese citizens.

Concerning the matter, the nuclear facilities said that there were no abnormalities in the plants due to Wednesday night’s earthquake that damaged the Fukushima site.
