Various wind-driven wildfires have been causing harm to various parts of Nebraska. Recently, retired fire chief and at least 15 firefighters have been killed due to it, authorities reported on Sunday.

The retired fire chief was from Cambridge and was working with firefighters as a spotter in Red Willow County to put out wildfires. The wildfire they were working on had already burned down more than 78 square miles in Red Willow, Furnas, and Frontier counties by Sunday afternoon.

The firefighters are still trying to control the large fire as per the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency. The officials could not say how much fire has been contained so far.

Alyssa Sanders, with NEMA, revealed that the 66-year-old fire chief named John P. Trumble was overwhelmed by smoke and fire after his car left the road Friday as he faced poor visibility from smoke and dust. He died and was found on Saturday.

15 firefighters were injured when they tried to contain the fire. Five of them were injured while trying to put out the fire that killed Trumble. The state agency could not provide the details of their injuries.

Wildfires are occurring all over the state since Friday. 14 counties including Cheyenne, Cherry, Dundy, Scotts Bluff, Blaine, Perkins, Duele, Burt, Butler, and more have been experiencing these fires. The state agency said that most of the other fires have been put out by Sunday afternoon.

The agency could not give an estimate of the total area that has been burned by the wildfires or how much property has been destroyed. Nearly 100 calves were killed in the fire in Rising City and nearly 3 fire trucks were also damaged in the fires.

Sanders said that the NEMA didn’t have all the details about the wildfires as the local fire departments were handling the entire matter.

The residents of various small towns like Wilsonville, Bartley, Indianola, and Cambridge in Nebraska had to evacuate their homes because of the fires. The evacuation orders were finally taken back on Saturday.

Three helicopters and many support trucks were provided by the Nebraska National Guard to help put out the fires.

More than 20 wildfires continue to burn in New Mexico on Sunday. One of them has already burned down 84 square miles of land.
