South Korean company LG Electronics Inc. has planned to start selling its big-screen OLED TVs in 2019 which can be rolled up and put away like a poster. The envisioned 65-inch TVs will retract automatically at the touch of a button like a garage door, the person who is familiar with the matter said on condition of inscrutability because it’s an internal matter. They will use OLED screens that produce crisper images and fold quite easier than the traditional LCD.

The South Korean company is shedding workers to reorganize and focus on future technologies, such as a flexible display. A prototype of television that displayed at LG’s research center in Seoul can be rolled up and stuffed into a box when it is not in need. By using OLED televisions, LG expects to revive a consumer’s electronics business which is struggling with the price declines and stiffening Chinese competition. LG showed off the rollable screen technology earlier in this year, whereas its first commercial release in TVs is expected in2019.

According to data tracker Statista, OLED TVs are expected to account for just 1.1 percent of the market in this year, as LCDs claim almost 98 percent. But unit shipments of the OLED TVs are projected to develop 70 percent next year to 4 million from an estimate of 2.35 million this year.

LG is planning to make its mark on the fifth-generation wireless technology, which is expected to revolutionize the mobile internet and power-up a plethora of gadgets from home appliances to cars. LG will unveil its first 5G Smartphone at next year’s Mobile World Congress. Sprint Crop declared about its working with LG to bring a device that runs on 5G to the U.S. in the first half.

Like Samsung, LG has no such plans to introduce a phone that is featuring ‘foldable’ screens next year. The company doubts the profitability and the cost of producing such a large screen for a mobile gadget.
