Unfolding Saradha chit fund case: Supreme Court asked CBI to question KP chief Rajeev Kumar

On Sunday night, Kolkata Police seized a CBI team in a precedent chain of events and also witnessed chief minister Mamata Banerjee rushing to Rajeev Kumar’s residence. CBI officers were taken to Shakespeare Sarani police station and were set free later under the instruction of Mamata Banerjee.

On Tuesday, Supreme Court ordered Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to cooperate with the CBI in the Saradha chit fund case. The court made it clear that no coercive steps can be taken against him.

On Tuesday, a bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that they directed the chief secretary of the state and the DGP to file replies before February 18th. The Supreme Court declared that Rajeev Kumar should appear at a neutral place, Shillong.

West Bengal Chief minister commented that the court decision of not arresting Rajeev Kumar is a moral victory. She also mentioned that he never said that he will not be available, but CBI came to arrest him.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, who appeared for the CBI, commented that there are several unparallel events taking place which is leading to a total breakdown of the constitutional machinery.

CBI appealed to the court about Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to cooperate with the investigation in Saradha chit fund case. CBI suspected that the Kolkata top cops were destroying evidence of Saradha chit fund case.
