Canadian actor Michael Hogan, who is famous for his depiction of Saul Tigh on space drama Battlestar Galactica had suffered a serious fall in February, and now his friends are trying to raise funds to help with his extensive health care needs.

After attending a Vancouver BSG fan convention on 17 February, Hogan, 71 had fallen and got his head at dinner, and went to bed, without considering it as a serious injury. According to his wife Susan, the actor was not responsive when she tried to wake him up the next morning and was rushed to the hospital, where it was discovered that he had a brain bleed and had to undergo immediate surgery.

Susan wrote on the GoFundMe page that the accident left him with complete paralysis on the left side, memory loss, cognitive impairment, and an inability to swallow and things got worse during the COVID-19 pandemic when visits by family got restricted and then denied, and no care team like the physiotherapist, OT, speech therapist, and others were allowed in.

Shari Ulrich, the Canadian/ American musician who wrote the GoFundMe description said that Hogan has been moved to the Berkley Care Centre in North Vancouver.

Ulrich wrote that Michael still cannot stand and needs an overhead tilt to be moved from the bed to the wheelchair. He still requires a feeding tube into his stomach, but has regained his speech and is largely coherent, and cognizant. He also said that Michael may not be able to work again and for the past seven months neither has Susan been able to, given the circumstances.

Ulrich also stated that the page doesn’t have a set money goal in mind and the real goal is just to have Michael, the sweet, teasing, funny, impish spirited bright light, and brilliant actor, and friend back. And, if everything goes fine, then one day back in his home on Bowen Island with his dog Harley. His family and all the treasured parts of his life, he knew.

The fellow BSG cast members have raised awareness of Hogan’s situation and sent love on social media.

Canadian actor Tricia Helfer, who played Cylon Number Six on the show, shared a link on the GoFundMe. She tweeted that the amazing XO has been fighting for months now and that Michael Hogan is one of the dearest, funniest, and most talented men she knows, who is going through an incredibly rough time. And, this is when they all can help him and his family.

Halifax-born BSG actor Ty Olsson also expressed grief on Twitter as did Edward James Olmos, who played Captain Adama and worked closely with Hogan.

Katee Sackhoff, who played Starbuck on BSG, also posted that these are hard times and if anyone feels that they have the ability to help, must come forward as this man, and his family are incredibly special and thanked all.

Born in Kirkland Lake, Ont, Hogan started acting from a young age, and apart from BSG, he played in appeared in TV shows Teen Wolf and Fargo. Recently he had appeared in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and had a role in Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and also did voice work for video games like Skyrim.
