Uniting the party is the new priority set by the newly elected Conservative leader Erin O’Toole.

Amidst the corona virus pandemic, a leadership campaign was forced to axis repeatedly and after a physically distanced convention that was thereby hampered by malfunctions with ballot-opening machines; O’Toole is eagerly waiting for the reporters to throw questions at him about his plans for what comes next.

Although he said that he wants to ensure that the party is united once again and that he is also ready to take on an election as soon as this fall following a leadership race that has seen frequent debate on whether or not the party should include more progressive conservative policies, and that how much influence should the social conservatives have.

On his victory speech, O’Toole acknowledged all and said that he has received a clear mission that is to unite the party and to champion the conservative principles, and finally to show everyone what they know so well. He further urged the party to come together and attract new voters who usually might not vote Conservative.

Furthermore, O’Toole accused Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of failing to look out for the Canadians and added that now that he is here, they shall be proposing a vision of a much stronger Canada which shall be more united and Canada shall be more prosperous.

Usually, the victory speech is directly followed by the past party conventions press conference, but the ballot opening delays pushed the results into the early hours of Monday which thereby lead to a delay in the timing of the press conference.

By the time when O’Toole finally took to the stage at an Ottawa hotel, space was kept nearly empty because of the physical distancing protocol and the time was roughly 2 am ET

According to O’Toole campaign officials, he intends to hold a press conference on Tuesday as he is expecting to spend most of his first day as the new leader in various meetings, one of them being a conversation with Trudeau.

As per reports received from an official with the Prime Minister’s Office, Trudeau has reportedly offered O’Toole some briefings that he would be interested in receiving which included the one with the Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam on this state of the corona virus pandemic.

However, O’Toole has not yet confirmed as to when the Conservatives might try to bring down the minority Liberal government and trigger an election, but he has said that the party requires to be ready in case a federal vote comes up this fall.

On his Monday afternoon tweet, Former Nova Scotia MP Peter MacKay who has lost to O’Toole on the third ballot also issued a call for unity.

MacKay tweeted that it is now the time for the Conservative party and the movement to come together and to focus on what is most important, that is to ensure that the country gets moving in the right direction once again he wrote.

Leslyn Lewis, the Toronto-area lawyer, who finished third in the race also showed her support for the new leader and the need for the party to work together by posting a tweet.

She tweeted that now is the time for everyone to work together and make sure that a strong and united Conservative Party is ready to win the next election.

Already O’Toole who ran on a platform which he referred to as the true blue conservative principles has marked the anger for former party leadership candidate named Maxime Bernier, who had reportedly quit the Conservatives to form his far-right fringe party back in 2018 but had failed to win any seats in the 2019 election, including his own.

Bernier accused the newly elected Conservative leader of wearing a true blue mask during the leadership campaign and also warned that he is a Liberal-lite.

In a news conference in Ottawa, Bernier said that the newly minted Conservative leader has worn a true blue mask only for strategic reasons, just to be the second choice of the less well-known candidates like Leslyn Lewis and Derek Sloan. He continued to say that he has a message for the supporters of these candidates and urged everyone not to be fooled. He said that now that O’Toole has become the leader, the mask shall fall off and he will take all the support for granted.

Bernier further went on to suggest that after running a leadership campaign that was aimed at winning support from the social conservatives, O’Toole would now shift directions and try to steal votes from the Liberals by proposing more centrist policies.
