Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have cut their ties officially with four of the biggest tabloids that are circulated from the UK. Things have changed because they are no longer the royal family’s senior members and have stepped down from accepting it. According to reports from multiple media outlets, a letter was sent out to the editor by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Sunday evening. The letter was sent to the respected editors of Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Daily Mail and The Sun. This was sent to them to provide the editors with the information that they are going to share ‘zero engagement’ with them that is a new policy they came up with.
The opening portion of the letter reads that as the Duchess and Duke of Sussex are settling down now and moving on to their lives next chapter and is not going to receive funded support publicly any longer, the letter has been written so that a new policy in media relations are set as it particularly pertains to the organizations the editors belong which is the four major British tabloids. Meghan and Harry said that they believe that for any democracy, the cornerstone has to be the free press, particularly during the crisis moments. They are also of the belief that the first obligation of journalism is the truth. But, in the years that have passed recently, there happens to be a slice of media that is quite influential and it has tried to put them in a position as they insulate them and do not take accountability for what they print or say even knowing the fact that it is evasive, distorted and false beyond reason.
Meghan and Harry went on to write that when power is enjoyed and taken for granted without responsibility, the trust that is placed by all in this industry that is much-needed is very much degraded.
The couple also said that while doing business the way the media outlets are doing one has to pay the real human cost. They also added that both of them have watched people they know as they happen to be strangers as their lives have been pulled apart for no good reason by the media, other than the major factor that the salacious gossip will boost the revenue from advertising.
The letter went on to read that having said this entire thing it has to be noted carefully that the Duchess and Duke of Sussex are not going to engage with the concerned media outlets. They also said that there will be zero engagement and no corroboration at all. This policy has also been instated for their team of communication so that the team can be protected from that side belonging to the industry that will never be seen by the readers.
It is also being explained by the couple that the adoption of the new policy was not just all about avoiding criticism or censoring the accurate reporting or the public conversation has to be shut down. It has been agreed upon by Meghan and Harry that the media has got all the rights in the world to have an opinion about the couple and report about the news. It does not matter, whether it is a good or a bad thing to do.
Nevertheless, it is said by the couple that it should not be based on heaps of lie. And, it has also been made clear by them that this is not going to be a blanket policy for all the media. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry said that they are looking forward to working with media organizations and journalists all across the globe to spotlight the causes and the issues that need to be acknowledged desperately.
It has also been said by the couple that they are also going to do whatever they can so that they can help opportunities that will be coming further for more voices that are underrepresented and diverse. But, what they are not going to do is to offer themselves up for the economy’s currency that comes out of distortion and clickbait.
