Obra Dinn One of The Best Detective Games Is Now Available On PS4

Return of the Obra Dinn, developed by an American-born herald developer Lucas Pope has a non-linear 1-bit visual style that makes it one of the best detective games in the present time and is coincidentally available in PS4 as well.

The game play is extremely interesting with the set up of the year 1807. Players are positioned as an insurance adjuster for the East India Trading Company who goes against their decision and sails off to a coastal town in Cornwall to investigate for the killings of the Obra Dinn’s crew.

The Obra Dinn is a part of the company financed trade vessel that somehow got cruised to the Cornish waters.

The Return of the Obra Dinn is here and it starts in the pitch black. The reason being a tired insurance adjuster is seen being helped by a local fisherman who conveys him to the local vessel as he keeps moaning and grumbling about the state of affairs. As soon as he opens his eyes, he gets transported to the ship. A ledger that is attached to him, takes note of all the events that have afflicted the crew of the Obra Dinn. All of this is subsequently written in chapters.

The use of ledger is also very tactful. The game allows free movement across the ship, which allows the players to uncover events in an un-uniformed manner. For example, the first corpse which occurs on an encounter is the event which had taken place at the end of the Obra Dinn event and regardless of what is being shown; the player has to necessarily fill up the ledger while minutely detailing the catastrophic event that happened to the ship and its crew.

Next comes, the Time-Travel Compass, which marks the start of the Detective work. Players temporarily get transported to the exact moment before the killing of the person who is being invested upon. This gets done with the help of an eerie looking compass, Momento Mori. With this special ability, players get to walk around the scene and jot down important details about the identity of the deceased person. And, also the event, the individuals present in the area, and the manner the person died.

The whole process of unveiling the identity takes time and patience. A crew manifest gets handed over to the players which have the names, ship rank, and ethnicity. The name of the deceased person has to tally with the names in the list for a proper audit. The player has to explore and deduce all vital facts from journals, pictures, conversations, and various other sources to get the precise identity of each person present on board.

Surprisingly, where the Return of the Obra Dinn excels is the depth to such proceedings. The gut factor plays an important role here. Players often have to take logical decisions by trusting their gut feeling and the actual data found. Solving the death case of a character doesn’t confirm the identity of the individual. Players can at times come up with clues about characters in the memories of the individuals that don’t seem to lead anywhere.

Players get to choose from a wide range of verbs to denote the different fates of an individual. While concluding the actual fates of each crew member of the Obra Dinn, the final interpretation facts can seem disheartening and prove difficult in the description. Players can choose from verbs like shooting, stabbing, suicide, bludgeoning, and more.  However, this also doesn’t guarantee the reason behind the death of an individual. This necessarily proves how difficult it is to crack the Return of Obra Dinn.

Although the whole set up seems interesting and overwhelming at first things get slower with time. The fact that 60 different cases need to be solved, gives the player a detailed understanding of the tragedy that had afflicted the Obra Dinn. The dashing and outstanding beauty of the game’s non-linear design encourages the player to follow the strands as they lead one another just like a spider in a web.

The proceedings become slow-paced as the actual fates and identities of three crew members need to be done so that they can be typed and immortalized in the ledger. After it’s all done, the case is considered closed which further narrows the chances of investigation.

The whole experience of the Obra Dinn seems to be extremely immersing. The voice control is completely planned out and each actor sells on their plight and demographic.

The overall atmosphere of the game is flawless and works superbly to create the perfect ambiance. Starting from the ultra-fine sound coming from the creak of floorboards on the gun deck to the sound of water splashing against the side of the boat, and the thunderous chatter of rains everything seems to be just appropriate and faultless.

The quality of the display is unconventional and gives a sense of belonging, which rarely any other game could provide.

Finally the Play station 4 Review: The Return of the Obra Dinn is out and it proves better than expected. With an 18th-century detective having a distinctive style, allowing players to deduce the game play based on logic and intuition the Return of the Obra Dinn is a must-play for any detective game lover.

Players can now check out the game on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
