Alcorn State’s Brandon Rembert has one last year to prove that he is worthy of being picked up by a Major League Baseball team in next June’s Draft.  The senior outfielder will be returning to school for his last year of college baseball.  Even though his 2020 season was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic, the NCAA granted him and other baseball players another year of eligibility.  For Rembert it wasn’t just a year of eligibility gained, but it was another shot at being able to possibly be picked up for pro ball. He states, “I was really glad that we got our year back.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to play collegiately again or even play at all.  It was definitely a relief the day we found out that we were going to be able to return for another season.”

Rembert was not picked up in the 2020 Draft this year.  This year’s Draft was limited to only 5 rounds, instead of the usual 40 rounds.  This drastically decreased Rembert’s chances of being picked up this year.  He states, “With the Draft only being 5 rounds this year, I knew that there was a good chance that I was not going to be picked up this year.  I was very hopeful that I would be picked up, but I also had to be realistic with myself.  I knew the chances of my named getting called this year were slim to none.  I didn’t have the best 2020 season either, even though we only played 12 games.”

In his 2020 campaign, Rembert batted a .255 with a homerun and 6 RBIs. These numbers are a small sample size, but he still felt like he could have produced more than he did. He states, “My numbers in 2020 were not the best.  I just feel like I didn’t have an opportunity to really get going.  We only played 12 games, so I felt like I didn’t really have a chance to get hot at all or get in a groove.  Everything was just all of a sudden canceled out of know where.” Rembert was coming off of a 2020 campaign where he was top 10 in the conference in batting average in and on base percentage.  He also led the team in many offensive categories.  Rembert looks to bounce back for a big year in 2021.

He states, “I feel like I really need to have a big year to have a legitimate shot at being drafted.  I had some looks, but I think a big year is needed for me to really shoot up draft boards. Being a 5th year senior, it is going to be pretty tough for me to be drafted. I’ve been using my time off to really focus on what I need to improve on for next year’s season.  I feel like the work I have put in will put me in the best position to have success on the field.”  Rembert garnered numerous pre-season honors in 2020, being named to the Perfect Game and SWAC Pre-Season All-Conference teams respectfully.  Rembert did not accumulate any postseason awards but was recognized by Black College Nines as a Player to Watch in the HBCU for the 2020 MLB Draft.

Even though Rembert was not picked up, he still sees that recognition as a big accomplishment for him. “I was very thankful to be recognized on that list.  I felt like some people were starting to take notice of me.  That recognition made me want to work even harder to achieve my dream above being drafted next year.  It really was eye-opening to me know that I was close to achieving my dreams.” Rembert is left with one last opportunity to impress scouts enough to take him in next June’s draft.  The 5th year senior will be pursuing his master’s degree in the fall. Brandon Rembert is anticipating on making the most of his last year of college baseball.  Hopefully, a huge year will increase his chances of being picked up in June and catapult him into an opportunity in pro ball.
