On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the world’s largest statue, The Statue of Unity which located in Kevadiya in Gujarat’s Narmada district. The height of the statue is 182m-tall and is built on the memory of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The statue of unity was inaugurated to coincide with the 143rd birth anniversary of Patel who is India’s first Home Minister. Modi pulled a lever and inaugurated the statue at the ceremony which occurred at the bank of the river Narmada. Water from 30 holy rivers including Ganga, Brahmaputra, Yamuna and many others are used in performing Puja Ceremony.
This project was conceived when Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat. Modi said that lakhs of farmers from all over India united and gave their tools, portions of soil and started the mass movement to build this statue.
Dedicating to the statue of the nation, Modi exclaimed that this is the significant moment in the history of India because a proper tribute has not been given to the tall personality who worked so hard to create India’s identity.
An amount of approximately 3000 crores has been used in building this statue. Three Indian Air Force planes flew past the statue and created a tricolor in the sky after the grand inauguration.
Patel’s nephew, Dhirubhai Patel commented that this lifetime moment for him and congratulated the government for their excellent effort to build this statue.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President, Venkaiah Naidu, and Home Minister, Rajnath Singh paid floral tributes to Patel. Later the sports minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore flagged off a run at Indian gate. Other top ministers, including Nirmala Sitharaman, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan and Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal flagged off the run for unity in Chennai, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar and many other parts of India.
The foundation of this statue was laid by Modi in 2013 while he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. This statue is almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Soon the statue of unity will lose its crown as the tallest statue to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial. This statue is under construction on the Mumbai coast and its height will be 192m. It is expected that the construction will finish in three years.
