Cineplex States That Its Phone App Trivia Game Is Bidding Goodbye To The Theatres

According to the latest reports, Cineplex has stated that the movie trivia app TimePlay shall no longer be available at its theatres as of 2021.

In a statement released o Thursday, the country’s largest theatre chain has said that the move o cut out their partnership with the tech company that operates the app has come amidst really tough decisions since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cineplex spokesperson Sarah Van Lange has stated that as a result of everything, they can confirm that nearly thirty-two million games and over three hundred thirty million SCENE points have been awarded and the end of 2020 saw the final TimePlay game that played out at their theatres.

He further continues saying that they want to sincerely thank all of the dedicated fans for playing TimePlay on their screens for over the years and appreciate their understanding.

TimePlay has allowed their guests to compete against each other, watching the same movie by testing their cinematic trivia, with the chance of earning points and other offers as the final reward.

The beta tests for the app were first launched back in the year 2011 and had garnered enough buzz to even attract some U.S. movie chains.

Over the years, support for the app was being made available to fifty-six of the more than one hundred sixty theatres that are being owned by Cineplex.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, movie theatre chains like Cineplex have taken a major financial hit as provincially-ordered restrictions have seen the closures of movie theatres alongside many other places of public gatherings.

In December, the company has since sold its head office in Toronto for $57 million in another effor5t to consolidate its debt amid the serious struggle caused by the corona virus pandemic.

However, the TimePlay owners have eventually begun to look at other ways to get the customers during the country’s periodical lockdowns, and even launching an at-home trivia night on the hone app.
