A private college in the Salt Lake City, Utah has been in the news and a center of controversy for offering a planned course on studying pornography.

There was a screenshot of a brief description of a course being offered at one of the Utah private colleges. The screenshot had gone viral as the college was offering an entire course and classes on porn in their 2022-23 academic year.

In the class, the entire class will ‘watch pornography films together’ for educational purposes. The course is titled ‘Film 3000 Porn’. The college has withdrawn this from its website listings. But sources have shared that the course is still available to various US media houses.

Later on, the college authorities said that the course was not taken down owing to any row.

The course description said, ‘Hardcore pornography is as American as apple pie and more popular than Sunday night football. Our approach to this billion-dollar industry is as both a cultural phenomenon that reflects and reinforces sexual inequalities (but holds the potential to challenge sexual and gender norms) and as an art form that requires serious contemplation.’

According to the description, ‘We will watch pornographic films together and discuss the sexualization of race, class, and gender and as an experimental, radical art form.’ The sources said the students can receive two credits for opting for the course.

Several media houses have spoken with the spokesperson of the college. He confirmed the course, and also said, ‘the college occasionally offers elective courses like this as an opportunity to analyze social issues. Descriptions of these courses, while alarming to some readers, help students decide if they wish to engage in a serious investigation of controversial subjects’.

Another media house reported that the college authorities said the course is not new. They have offered the course quite a few times already. Due to the pandemic, they have discontinued for the past two years. The college has also said that they had over 20 students each year taking up the course.

The class is listed by Westminster College. The course shares that students in the class watch pornographic movies together and discuss the sexualism of race, class, and gender. And they will explore pornography as an experimental, radical art form.

This course has fired an outcry from social media users. The conversation commentator Candace Owens has also discussed this topic. Several media outlets including local stations KSL-TV and ABC4 reported this controversy.

A 21st April Facebook post which has been shared over 50 times said, ‘Since yesterday’s media attention from numerous sources, Westminster College has deleted their ‘PORN’ class from their website! Interesting.’

14 students have enrolled for this two-credit course.

Sheila Rappazzo Yorkin said, the chief marketing officer for the college, ‘often explore challenging subject matter to further understand their pervasiveness and impact.’

Adding more, ‘Descriptions of these courses, while alarming to some readers, help students decide if they wish to engage in a serious investigation of controversial subjects.’
